The main symptoms of cervical disc herniation are pain in the neck, which can spread to the shoulders, arms and hands, and tingling and numbness, which can vary depending on the degree of dislocation of the disc.
Herniated cervical disc consists of a displacement of part of the intervertebral disc, which is the region between one vertebra and the other, most often caused by spinal wear and poor posture. The C1, C2, C3, C4, C5, C6 and C7 vertebrae are part of the cervical spine, with cervical disc herniation between the C6 and C7 vertebrae being more common. However, regardless of the location of the hernia, the symptoms will be similar.
Some of the most common symptoms that can occur in people with herniated discs are:
- Neck ache;
- Pain radiating to the shoulders, arms and hands;
- Tingling and numbness;
- Decreased muscle strength;
- Difficulty moving your neck.
In some cases, a herniated cervical disc may be asymptomatic and may only be discovered accidentally during an imaging exam. Know other types of herniated discs.
How the diagnosis is made
The diagnosis of herniated cervical disc consists of a physical examination by the doctor, as well as a conversation with the patient to understand the intensity of symptoms, as well as health history and posture habits.
In addition, diagnostic tests, such as X-rays, computed tomography and / or magnetic resonance imaging, for example, can be performed.
What is the treatment
Treatment for cervical hernia depends on the location, severity of symptoms and the degree of compression of the spinal nerves. At the beginning of the disease, treatment consists only of rest, administration of analgesic and anti-inflammatory drugs, physical therapy and, eventually, use of a cervical collar to avoid sudden movements of the neck.
However, if symptoms persist, surgery to remove the hernia and decompress the cervical spine may be recommended. A fusion of the affected vertebrae or insertion of a prosthetic disc may also be performed. Find out what are the causes of cervical hernia.
