Compression stockings, also known as compression or elastic stockings, are stockings that put pressure on the leg and improve blood circulation and can be indicated in the prevention or treatment of varicose veins and other venous diseases.
Currently, there are several types of compression stockings, with different pressure and height gradients, with some covering only the foot, others reaching the thigh and others covering the entire leg and abdomen. Thus, it is important that compression stockings are indicated by the doctor or nurse according to the purpose of their use.
What are worth for
Compression stockings, when applying pressure to the legs, help blood to return from the feet to the heart, functioning as a kind of pump that acts against the force of gravity, helping blood to return and improving blood circulation.
Thus, compression stockings are indicated in cases where there is a change in heart valves or obstructed veins, so that blood circulation is compromised. Thus, other situations that the use of compression stockings can be indicated are:
- Venous insufficiency;
- History of thrombosis;
- Presence of varicose veins;
- History of post-thrombotic syndrome;
- Pregnancy;
- After surgery, especially when the postoperative period requires the person to sit or lie down all day;
- Elderly people, since blood circulation is more compromised;
- Feeling of heavy, painful or swollen legs.
In addition, the use of compression stockings can be indicated for people who spend a large part of the day sitting or standing, as it can also compromise blood circulation. Other situations in which the use of compression stockings may be suggested is on long trips, as the person sits for many hours.

When not indicated
Despite all its benefits, compression stockings should only be used under medical advice, being contraindicated in the following situations:
- Ischemia;
- Uncontrolled heart failure;
- Infections or wounds on the legs or areas covered with the socks;
- Skin infections;
- Allergy to stocking materials.
In addition, although these socks are suitable for situations where it is necessary to spend a large part of the day sitting or lying down, they are not suitable for bedridden people who are unable to get out of bed, as they may end up increasing the risk of clots.
