Domperidone is a medication used to treat poor digestion, nausea and vomiting in adults and children, for periods of less than a week.
This remedy can be found in generic or under the trade names Motilium, Peridal or Peridona and is available in the form of tablets or oral suspension, and can be purchased in pharmacies, upon presentation of a prescription.
What is it for
This medicine is intended for the treatment of digestion problems often associated with delayed gastric emptying, gastroesophageal reflux and esophagitis, feeling of fullness, early satiety, abdominal distension, high abdominal pain, excess belching and intestinal gas, nausea and vomiting, heartburn and burning in the stomach with or without regurgitation of gastric contents.
In addition, it is also indicated in cases of nausea and vomiting of functional, organic, infectious or alimentary origin or induced by radiotherapy or drug treatment.
How to take
Domperidone should be taken 15 to 30 minutes before meals and, if necessary, at bedtime.
For adults and adolescents weighing more than 35 kg, the dose of 10 mg is recommended, 3 times a day, orally, and the maximum dose of 40 mg should not be exceeded.
In babies and children under 12 years old or weighing less than 35 kg, the recommended dose is 0.25 mL / kg of body weight, up to 3 times a day, orally.
Possible side effects
The most common side effects that can occur during treatment with domperidone are depression, anxiety, decreased sexual appetite, headache, drowsiness, restlessness, diarrhea, rash, itching, breast enlargement and tenderness, milk production, absence of menstruation, breast pain and muscle weakness.
Who should not use
This medicine should not be used in people who are allergic to any component of the formula, prolactinoma, severe stomach pains, persistent dark stools, liver disease or who are using certain drugs that alter metabolism or that alter heart rate, as is the case of itraconazole, ketoconazole, posaconazole, voriconazole, erythromycin, clarithromycin, telithromycin, amiodarone, ritonavir or saquinavir.
