Content
Sweet potato flour, also called powdered sweet potato, can be used as a low to medium glycemic index carbohydrate source, which means that it is gradually absorbed by the intestine, maintaining the body's energy for more time without causing an increase in fat production or blood glucose spikes.
Like sweet potatoes, flour enriches food by facilitating and stimulating muscle mass gain. Sweet flour can be added to recipes such as pancakes, smoothies, breads and cakes.
The advantages of using this flour are:
- Greater practicality, because using flour instead of potatoes saves cooking time in the kitchen;
- Greater possibility of use in varied recipes, such as vitamins, broths and pancakes;
- Higher caloric concentration in flour, facilitating the increase of calories in the diet for those who want to gain weight and muscle mass;
- Easy to carry and use at work or as a pre-workout at the gym;
- Improves intestinal transit;
- It improves the health of the skin, hair and eyes, as it is rich in beta-carotene, a powerful antioxidant.
Sweet potato flour can be made at home or purchased ready-made at stores offering nutrition products and food supplements. See also the benefits of sweet potatoes.
How to do it at home
To make sweet potato flour at home, you need:
- 1 kg sweet potato
- 1 grater
- 1 large shape
- blender
Preparation mode:
Wash the potatoes well and grate in a large drain, so that they become pieces similar to straw potatoes, but larger. Spread the grated potatoes well in a pan, so as not to be piled up, and take to a low preheated oven, about 150 to 160ºC, until the potatoes are well dried, loose and crunchy. Then, the dried potatoes should be mashed in a blender, little by little, until they become the flour powder, which should be kept in a clean glass jar with a lid, preferably in the refrigerator. Each 1 kg of sweet potato yields about 250g of flour.
How to consume
Sweet potato flour can be added in pre- or post-workout vitamins, increasing the energy value of shakes. It can also be mixed with other flours in bread, pasta, cake and pancake recipes, making it ideal to use sweet potato flour up to about 20% of the total flour weight in the recipe.
Other ways to use it include breading beef or chicken steaks, to increase meat balls, and to thicken broths and soups.
